OVERVIEW
In September 2018, I finally flew out to Los Angeles to create a project that Raven and I have been planning for almost five years. Raven Quinn is a vocalist, songwriter, and artist based in California, and this song, Alchemy, is the first single from her forthcoming album. Raven and I were talking about creating music videos together for her second album, back in 2014, before our plans were derailed when she was unexpectedly diagnoses with an early stage but aggressive form of Breast Cancer. Putting her music on hold, she went into battle with the illness, and came out supremely successful two years later. Now, after months of recovery to be back to the self she's wanted to be since before the Cancer, she and her partner Rob put together the video shoot she's always dreamt of for the new music. She asked me to be the director, in charge of a small crew at Popsicle LA, where they filmed the temporary bat cave scenes in The Dark Knight. Rob wrangled up a crew of friends and their associates, steadycam ops, lighting designers, musicians.
The biggest highlight of the experience was of course getting to see Raven finally have an experience she's been waiting for and dreaming of her entire life after the battles she's fought, but additionally, in more momentary ways, when the crowd of crew and band left working and watching as our time ran down would erupt in applause and cheers after watching one of Raven's first solo takes. The kind of honest excitement that tired people project when they discover something that truly surprises and impresses them, realizing that though their hopes were high, what they're seeing is only exceeding them.
